Built on the rhythmic bedding of the Batá drums of Chilean/Australian percussion stalwart Javier Fredes, Lewis attempts to find a meeting ground between this deep Yoruban and Santeria drumming tradition, his roots in Melbourne’s lo-fi beat scene and Jazz upbringing.
More recent love of Detroit’s immeasurably important language of house and techno further informs the extended jam of byproduct with the help of long time collaborator Ziggy Zeitgeist of Melbourne future-soul outfit 30/70.
byproduct is an expression of appreciation for the Batá tradition, seeking to continue the exchange of Afro-Cuban and Jazz crossover explored by the likes of Barney McAll and Pedrito Martinez among many others.
